Minutes of the March 7/2022 Meeting

The Keweenaw ATV Club meeting was held at the VFW POST Hubbell.

The meeting was called to order at 7:10 by Club President Daryl St. John. Other officers present were Vice President Kitty Beleck, Secretary/Treas. Julie Karvonen, Trustees Mike Panijan, and Trails Maintenance Supervisor Mike McMahon.

The minutes of the November 1/2021 meeting were read by Daryl St. John and a motion to approve was made by Faye McMahon, seconded by Ryan Laporte, motion passed by the vote of the membership. Julie read the financial report- bank balance $24,328.91 with $6270 being map ad payments. No payed membership was given. Motion to approve was made by Gordon Wetelainen, seconded by Mike Panijan, motion passed by the vote of the membership.

Old Business:

a) Holiday party- The party was cancelled due to the uncertainty in regards to possible shutdowns.
Instead, the Club will have an outdoor picnic on June 25th 2022 at the Ahmeek Park. In case of rain it will be held in the Ahmeek Fire Hall. Cards will be sent out closer to the date with more information.

b)Trail BD-Lake Linden Trail- Zane Hyrkas, project Manager/OHM Gave an update on the project.

New Business:

a) Keweenaw County is selling a 1992 John Deere tractor with a side brush arm for $4000. The Club would like to purchase it, along with the snowmobile club, and have joint ownership. A motion was made to purchase by Mike Panijan, seconded by John Laitinen. The Keweenaw Recreation Coalition gave the Club a donation of $1000 and also made up a flyer to raise more donations towards the machine . All operating/maintenance costs will be split between the two clubs. They also gave the Snowmobile Club $1000.

b) Trail Maintenance packets will be handed out at the May meeting. Please consider adopting a section of trail. Can also be done as a group.

c) The Club is also looking at some property to use as a “Scramble area” at the Silver Mine Sand Pit. Mike and Daryl are discussing the land sale with Eric Stier from the land company.

d) MISORVA- MI. snowmobile & orv association sent out an announcement that they have been granted 1.15 million dollars to be dispersed to all MI. Motorized Trail Groups that are partnered with the DNR. All grant requests need to be in by April 30. 2022

e)The Club has been asked if we could do our Fall Ride in honor of Suicide Prevention. A member lost a nephew to suicide and is hoping we can raise awareness for the cause. The Members employee is having T-Shirts made up and has donated $1000to the cause. Tentative date is Sept. 10,2022. More details to follow.

Questions/Comments from the floor:
There have been several complaints of riders tearing up Trail #122 behind the Maple Leaf. As of yet, that area is not an ATV trail. It was suggested that gates should be installed during the wet season.

Joe Serotzke, Jam Service, would like to put together an event for an ATV/Sled Swap on July9&10,2022 at the old Lake Linden Fairgrounds, Possibly include arts and crafts and food.
