We applied for a grant to put in a 14 mile,
DNR approved, trail from Portage Bridge in Houghton through Dollar Bay and Like
Linden to Calumet.
We ran into a few roadblocks regarding
easements but both issues are currently waiting for final signatures:
1.
Issue with International Paper
ownership – As it stands at this time, the DNR is finalizing the purchase of
the property.
2.
Issue with the Village of Lake Linden
– This issue is being resolved by way of a land swap between the DNR and Like
Linden Village.
The grant was deferred until these issues
were resolved. It now looks good and we
hope to get the grant before this summer.
In other action, we met with the Keweenaw
County Board of Commissioners and asked if they would purchase the entire
snowmobile & ATV trail system. This
would create a multi-use trail system throughout the entire county as stated in
the Keweenaw County Recreation Plan.
The Board voted unanimously to apply for
funding to make the purchase. Letters
were sent to International Paper Company about their intent and to WUPPDR to
secure grant monies to do so.
